Post Operative Cataract Pathway - 30/06/2016 at Staffordshire Local Optical Committee

Post Operative Cataract Pathway- 30/06/2016

SASPEC have been in talks with Stafford & Surrounds, Cannock Chase, East Staffordshire and South East Staffordshire CCGs who have expressed a desire, subject to clarifying the final details, for a post operative cataract pathway in their areas.

This will involve referrals which have been sent to Rowley Hall hospital in Stafford, going back to community optometrists for a post operative cataract follow up check.

More details will follow, but at this time we need your expressions of  interest. The training for this follows the LOCSU pre & post operative cataract pathway which can be found on the WOPEC website (there is no requirement to attend an OSCEs event for this pathway).

Staffordshire LOC strongly advises all optometrists who send Direct Access Cataract referrals to Rowley Hall to participate in the post op scheme, as the commissioners expect these optometrists be involved.  After all, most patients will prefer to have their post operative assessment at the same opticians practice from which they were referred.  Furthermore, it is very likely that the pre and post op cataract pathways will eventually be merged into one service.

The LOCSU Pre- and Post-operative cataract course uses a  distance learning approach incorporating lectures, a Visual Recognition (VRICS) test and a video following a cataract patient journey in hospital. To become accredited for the cataract pathway, optometrists have to complete online learning and multiple choice tests.

In order to access this training, you will be required to enter a code. As the provisional launch date is 12th September you might wish to commence the training as soon as is convenient. Please let Alison at the LOC office know if you would like a code.
